Education empowers communities

It improves wellbeing, boosts knowledge and fosters personal and collective growth. By uplifting literacy and critical thinking, education empowers people to participate in civic life and challenge cycles of poverty and inequality. From skill development and mentorship programs to early childhood education and youth empowerment, there are a number of charitable organizations fostering lifelong learning in our region.

Support Education and Learning

There are a number of ways you can support education and learning in our community, including:

Exploring what helps paramedics thrive

Paige Mason, a Royal Roads University student and frontline paramedic, received a $25,000 prize through the Rachel and Ernest Fox Legacy Award fund hosted at Victoria Foundation. This award honours graduates who demonstrate courage and a vision for transformation. Her research is helping paramedics stay healthy and inspired in one of the most challenging professions.

Creating the conditions for youth to thrive

When youth see their ideas take shape in the real world, it affirms their voice, builds momentum and deepens learning. The Young Entrepreneurs of Canada Association delivers PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs — a free, six-to-eight-week, experiential, game-based business and financial literacy program for Grades four to eight.

Culturally and Visually Enriched Reading Spaces

With the help of Community Grants Program funding, Salt Spring Island Public Library revitalized their children’s area in 2024. Focused on accessibility, inclusivity, safety and Indigenous-focused design, they dubbed their new cozy nook “The Grotto”. With a unique lighting effect, artworks by Coast Salish artist Charlene Johnny along with new toys and literacy tools, this space promotes accessibility and cultural representation.
