Sports and recreation build healthier lives and strengthen wellbeing

Sports and recreation support physical health and mental wellbeing while promoting social connection. They play a foundational role in addressing health concerns and help people live happy, fulfilling lives. When started at a young age, physical activity can help children build confidence, strengthen their resiliency and promote lifelong healthy habits. Organizations in our region are increasing access to sports through programming that support people with disabilities, children and Indigenous youth. Special programs are also introducing many newcomer families to local sports culture.

Support Sports and Recreation

There are a number of ways you can support sports and recreation in our community, including:

Pacific Institute for Sport Education

In collaboration with the Victoria Foundation and the Cridge Centre for the Family, the Pacific Institute for Sport Education developed a program about physical literacy. Their goal was to proactively address health concerns by helping children learn how to stay healthy and find a pathway to live a happy life filled with quality activities and social connectedness.

Sport for Keeps: Junior wheelchair rugby programming fills vital service gaps

The BC Wheelchair Sports Association identified a key gap: while kids could try adaptive sports for a day, there was no regular programming to support long-term growth. That’s why they launched a weekly junior rugby program at Pacific Institute for Sport Education for kids with disabilities aged 6 to 18.
